Dun Laoghaire Harbour Festival - October 28-30th
Before you read on , its a bit ranty be prepared ...
A three day event on the harbour in Dun Laoghaire , i liked the venue was open but at the same time its openness made it windy and cold for the traders and probably did not encourage the customers to stay as long as they may have. The vehicles on the three days were mixed between which was a part of the planning i was told . There were some great trucks and buses but i thought there were also quite a few more modern ones that didn't need to be there. The event itself was poorly advertised and signposted locally and attendance was disappointing for everyone . But the perks of quiet shows for myself is mainly time to get to know customers better and more personally which is a staple of our business
The last image above was a restored vehicle by Combat Cars specialists in Cavan , the work they do is excellent and some of the vehicles they restored can now be seen in the Irish Military War Museum in Collon co Louth . The 2nd day there were more military vehicles on display and the american cars arrived in aswell
The more of these shows i do the more it becomes apparent to me how much of the promotion of events is becoming even more increasingly important by the organiser because of the pure volume of events going on right now every weekend . It used to be a case that there were small local shows and a set amount of big dates to attract the crowds and so far the only show i've been at that have a balance of something for everyone has been the moynalty steam threshing . The cavan show was a great venue and well organised but for crowds or diversity it needed something more and the flow of the staging could have been better.
So as a trader if i was to plan a show i would have everything staggered so people would see everything and everyone with mixing vehicles in along side stalls and not have the segregation i see so often . Events need to have more to offer than just one focus like dun laoghaire could have been a much bigger event. In the same village a craft and food fair was taking place at the same time on sunday . They could easily have been combined with a lower entry fee for the gates and a lot more for people attending .
The Irish Military War Museum is a very good example of getting close to doing an event right .. they now have irelands largest inflatable obstacle courses and add to that for family events with partnering with a bouncy castle company to bring that too about 12 castles. The museum itself is the best i've been in i'm a very big fan of what they are doing . They had family days this year that appealed to everyone , a huge museum of militaria , some traders and stalls for food and drink and giftware and the assault course / playground bbq area and things for the kids .
To me although not my best day of personal business it was the event that stands out so far as being a very good mix of getting people interested.
We did try out the new trailer layout this week as well with the removal of the old corner room ( the orange part ) to make way for more display space inside for our large new range of German Signs that just came in .. it made it more spacious inside but also less shelter from the elements and no spot to hide in anymore ... i always feel by sitting in the centre im encouraging people to keep walking !! away !!
Cavan Equestrian Centre Vintage show October 15th
Its interesting being a trader at these events , im getting to see the other side to the shows . Well honestly i never went to a vintage show before i started trading but from being at other events its interesting to see the other side of things. So, what was good about this event firstly was its fully indoors, The venue was absolutely huge and ideal for the show size. Our stall was set up in the top arena , now as a trader i would have prefered they set the trading stalls in the middle arena as access to top arena wasn't amazing or obvious and if they had stuck the Vintage Cars at the top then the full amount of people on the day would have passed through the stalls.
Anyway we set up as best we could , the soft ground was actually ideal as nothing got damaged while being put out , we had our vintage cases on display for the first time and they looked great . I'm getting to know some of the other traders now and you couldn't find a more open and welcoming group of people , it's been one of the better parts of the shows. So the show grounds opened at 7 and many of the traders who hadnt arrived the night before where arriving and starting to set up. Having a brother locally i arrived the night before and was set up about 60% of the way before arriving on the morning. The show itself had a huge selection of vintage cars and tractors on display with lots of other interesting trades on show as well . As a spectator it was an excellent event . I didnt get to take many pictures this time as i was alone until the evening when my wife arrived with the kids .. here are a few pictures of the different vintage work engines that were on display working and one of the big rig with matthew... also if you noticed the above picture , my doors were being tied open using plastic bags , misplaced the box with the fittings and had to improvise !!
